How to Create a Cozy Spring Ambience at Home

February 15, 2025 by cozykeeper 2 Comments

Spring is in the air!

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes the desire for a change in the home. It’s time to pack away the dark colors and heavy textiles and make room for the light airiness of Spring. Here are some easy ways to create a cozy spring ambience in your home!

From Winter Chill to Light & Airy Spring Warmth

Winter is all about warm blankets, rich colors, and deep, comforting scents, but as spring arrives, it’s time to welcome brighter spaces, fresh greenery, and soft, refreshing textures. Instead of heavy throws and dim lighting, think airy fabrics, natural light, and gentle floral fragrances that bring a breath of fresh air into your home.

How can you create this effortless transition? It’s easier than you think! Simple decor swaps, intentional lighting choices, and seasonal scents can completely transform the atmosphere of your space. Let’s start with one of the most powerful mood-setters—lighting.

Soft & Inviting Spring Lighting

The right lighting can instantly shift your home’s ambience from cozy winter retreat to fresh spring sanctuary. Here’s how to create a soft, inviting glow perfect for the season:

Swap Heavy Lighting for Soft, Natural Light

  • Replace dark, moody lamp shades with lighter, neutral ones to diffuse light beautifully.
  • Opt for warmer daylight bulbs instead of deep amber hues. (Rechargeable light bulbs make this so easy. Here are my go-to’s!)
  • Open your curtains during the day to let in as much natural light as possible.

String & Fairy Lights

  • Drape delicate string lights over a mirror, mantel, or headboard for a soft, magical glow.
  • Choose warmer white lights instead of deep golden tones for a fresh yet cozy effect.

Candlelight with Soft Floral Scents

  • Swap out winter’s spiced candles for light floral or citrus scents like lavender, jasmine, or lemon verbena.
  • Place candles on mirrored trays to reflect their glow and brighten up your space.

Maximize Natural Light

  • Use sheer curtains instead of heavy drapes to let sunlight filter through.
  • Place mirrors across from windows to reflect natural light and make rooms feel larger and brighter.
  • Opt for light-colored decor (white, pastels, and natural wood) to enhance brightness.

Fresh Spring Scents

When we enter a room we tend to take in the space with our nose first. Bringing in the fresh and pure scents of nature is a great way to welcome in the spring season. Here are some great ways to fill your home with the smells of the season:

Essential Oil Diffusers

I stopped using synthetic fragrances in my home years ago and never looked back. The fresh herbal scents that essential oils provide are such a stark contrast to the heavy, headache inducing synthetic smells I was accustomed to. Essential oils are a wonderful way to capture the smells of spring and bring them indoors. Here’s some tips on how to do this:

  • Tuck essential oil diffusers around your home.
  • Choose oils that are naturally occurring during the spring season.
  • Pick scents that will match the activity in your home; citrus and mint for spring cleaning, or lavender in the evening as you tuck in for the night.
  • Try some of these blends!
Lavender + Lemon (fresh & calming)
Rose + Bergamot (floral & uplifting)
Grapefruit + Peppermint (energizing & clean)

DIY Simmer Pots

Simmer pots are one of my favorite ways to fill my home with holiday cheer around christmas time. I love the idea of a Spring simmer pot and I’m so excited to play around with some different combinations. So here are tricks I’m planning on using to Spring-a-fy my diy simmer pots this season:

  • Thrift a small decorative or glass pot to use as your simmer vessel.
  • Choose herbs and dried flowers that compliment one another.
  • Play around with more unique smells like rosemary, mint, and vanilla.
  • If using a glass pot, pick ingredients that will create a lovely color while it simmers.

Naturally Scented Candles

I’ve been on a real candle kick here lately and plan on keeping the good times rolling right into Spring. I plan on incorporating some lovely botanical candles for decor. I often make my own candles and have some fragrance blends I’m excited to try out!

Spring Inspired Decor Swaps

Using nature-inspired home decor is a very effective way to represent the change of season in your home. Whether its a floral wreath, wicker basket, or a botanical candle subtle changes can have a big impact when used together to create a cohesive ambience. Here’s some of my favorite decor swaps for the Spring season!

  • Lightweight Fabrics – Swapping out the chunky knit blankets for some light cotton or muslin throws. Taking down the heavy black out curtains and trading them for sheer fabric like linen or tulle. Packing up the fleece sheets and replacing them with crisp cotton sheets paired with a linen duvet cover. (Checkout my blog post here about my linen duvet for under $80!)
  • Pastel or Floral Accents – There is nothing more Spring-y than pastels and floral print, in my opinion.
  • Bringing the Outdoors In – Decorating with fresh flowers and potted plants.
  • Seasonal Tablescapes – DIYing some Spring themed center pieces for the diningroom table, kitchen island, or coffee tables.

Changing all the wall art, textiles, and furnishings in your home can get very expensive. You can massively reduce this cost by thrifting unique items, DIYing various pieces and slowly growing your collection one year at a time.

 Cozy & Inviting Spring Textures

Playing around with textures in my home is something that I’m trying to get better at. Choosing pieces that give off a particular vibe and fit a specific ambience in their very nature. This subtle approach can be just as effective as a bold statement when done right. Here’s some tips I plan on following as I add to my Spring collection:

  • Layering – Layering soft breathable fabrics like Linen, Muslin, and Gauze.
  • Wooden Furnishings – Bringing in wicker, rattan, and other light wooden furnishings and wall hangings for a natural touch.
  • Glass – Thrifting vintage glass and homemade pottery for an organic, cozy feel.

Creating a Relaxing Spring Soundscape

Sounds is one of my go to ways to create an ambience in my home. For years I have turned to Youtube for ambience videos to play in the living room when we had company over or I was just aiming for a specific vibe. Turning my Black empty TV into a fireplace, or wooded glade with soft forest sounds is just such a simple way to add some extra charm to my home. When looking for ways to add Spring themed sounds to your home try these tips:

  • Soft nature sounds – Birds chirping, gentle rain, or forest ambience.
  • Acoustic or lo-fi – Find some soothing acoustic playlists or Ghibli-esque lo-fi tracks.
  • Record Music – Thrift some vintage records to play for some lovely background music. If you don’t have a record player search for Record Player Ambience or Vintage Oldies on Youtube.

Final Thoughts..

Refreshing your home for the change of season can be so fun, but it can also be overwhelming. If you are like me and feel the urge to run into town and purchase every potted plant and wicker shelf you can find in a desperate attempt to make your home look like the ones you see on Pinterest, DON’T DO THAT. Regardless of the season you want your home to feel just that, YOUR home. Try not to be swayed by the comparison game.

Take your time and enjoy the process of collecting items that are timeless and that you will look forward to decorating with for years to come. Pair this redecorating process with some spring decluttering and deep cleaning. In the end you’ll be left with a beautiful home that looks and smells as fresh as a Spring breeze.
